Frankie's Fabulous Scooter
Design Specification

GENERAL DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

I plan to use this motorcycle for everyday riding. This means normal highway and country roads, potholes, rain and so on. I weigh 250# and will sometimes carry another 200# of passenger and "stuff". I do not plan to enter this motorcycle in any "beautiful bike" shows.

This bike must be reliable. I do not want to do anything beyond oil changes once the riding season starts. All design decisions must take dependability and durability into consideration as a primary objective.

I favor "simple" designs over things that are "trick" or "flashy".

I like a somewhat "beefy" look (e.g. large gas tank, full rear fender, heavy forks, etc.). However, I also like a clean, uncluttered, design with a little stretch and rake to the front end. The looks of the Big Dog AeroSport, Titan Roadrunner, Daytona Classic Pro-street, CMC Rocket 88 and wild west MC web site cover model are all examples of good starting design baselines. The pictures on the previous page illustrate the look I am going for.

I will want to be able to carry around a change of clothes while on road trips but will want the bike's lines to look "uncluttered" when riding around Town. An easily removable storage (leather) design is preferred. I like a sissy bar and a padded passenger seatback to hang stuff on. A very comfortable driver's saddle and passenger seat is imperative!

I like comfortable, forward mounted shifter and rear brake designs. Handlebar placement and design should be such that it is comfortable for long periods of time. No instruments on the handlebars. Any design that would prevent eating clutch cables would be appreciated.

The less Harley Davidson parts that are in my bike, the better I will like it. I want my bike to look good, sound great (but not outrageously illegal) and go like a rocket. One of my design requirements is to be able to say that there isn't a H-D part in my bike. Unless there is absolutely no way around it, please make it so.

One of the things I want to get out of the builder is a sanity check that the stuff I am proposing is a realistic and reliable combination. Please don't take anything in this spec to be non-negotiable. I am not the motorcycle expert here. I'm just the one paying the bills! :)
